The Democratic Party is a big-tent center-left party in the United States. It is the largest and oldest party in the United States, the second being its main and historic rival, the Republican Party. Before 1860, the party supported limited government and state sovereignty while opposing a national bank and high tariffs. In the late 19th century, it continued to oppose high tariffs and had bitter internal debates on the gold standard. In the early 20th century, it supported progressive reforms and opposed imperialism. Since Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal coalition in the 1930s, the Democratic Party has promoted a social liberal platform. As of 2020, the party advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, support for organized labor, universal healthcare, affordable college, and environmental protection.
Factions[edit | edit source]
Although the Democratic Party has no formal caucus groupings, there are several groupings which Democratic politicians identify as.
Moderates[edit | edit source]
Moderate Democrats are more near the center of the political spectrum, who normally hold fiscally moderate beliefs combined with a mix of conservative and liberal social policy. These include Representative skiboy625 and Senator polkadot48.
Liberals[edit | edit source]
Liberalism has been the domineering ideology within the Democratic Party since the early 20th century. Liberals generally hold views in favor of social progressivism while maintaining support for a market economy. These include ItsZippy23, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives.
Progressives[edit | edit source]
Progressive Democrats are the bridge between the Liberal and Socialist wing of the Democratic Party. On economic policy, progressives support the expansion of the welfare state and government interference in the economy to create a mixed economy. These include Cubascastrodistrict ( Democratic leader in the Senate), and Governor HurricaneOfLies.
Democratic Socialists[edit | edit source]
Democratic Socialists are the farthest left and newest notable faction within the Democratic Party. They hold views in favor of the nationalization of industries and policies in favor of the working class. Notable members include Atlantic Commonwealth Speaker Darthholo and Speaker of the House Brihimia.
